We are now halfway through implementation of the World Health Organization’s Global Road Map to Defeat Meningitis by 2030.

This is the global plan put in place to eliminate bacterial meningitis epidemics, reduce cases of vaccine-preventable bacterial meningitis by 50% and deaths by 70%, and reduce disability and improve the quality of life for those affected by meningitis of any cause.

Over the past five years, we have seen incredible progress, from increased disease awareness to the introduction of new vaccines and clinical guidelines.

That is why we are coming together with advocates from around the world to celebrate progress to date. In particular, we celebrate the unrelenting commitment of civil society and advocates around the world who work to defeat meningitis every day, everywhere.

But there is still more to be done. To defeat meningitis, governments, organisations and civil society must come together to take action.

The WHO’s Global Road Map to Defeat Meningitis by 2030 calls on all countries to develop and implement their own, tailored national plan for defeating meningitis. By approving the road map, governments agreed to take this important step to protect their people.

Yet, at this halfway point, fewer than 10% of countries have followed through on this commitment.

That is why we are calling on governments to honour their commitment to protecting and saving lives from this deadly and debilitating disease.
