I’m Davide Morana, a para-athlete and motivational speaker.
My second life, as I call it, began six years ago. At age 24, I contracted bacterial meningitis, which led to the amputation of all four of my limbs. When I woke up from my coma, I remember the health professionals telling me that 93% of people in my condition usually do not survive. That statistic motivated me to accept my circumstances and strive to live a better life.
The recovery process was tough, as I had to relearn everything from scratch. However, I was determined to regain my independence in record time. Using prostheses was exhausting at first, but with training and months of rehabilitation, it became easier to manage.
After what I’ve been through, I enjoy every day as if it were my first and last day. That’s why being an athlete appeals so much to me. The discipline in sports keeps me focused and present. Through hard work, dedication and sharing my story, I’ve become a spokesperson for meningitis awareness and a professional athlete.
Since 2023, I am also one of the proud co-creators of the
Meningitis Flag, a symbol that brings together the entire meningitis community, a symbol that brings me joy and hope that one day we’ll defeat this disease.
Now, I am ready to take on my next challenge, hopefully representing Italy in the 100m and 200m race at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
