Millie Wilson - Meningitis in your words

We were on our first family holiday when Millie took sick. Myself, my husband and son went to Benidorm in March 2024.

On Friday, March 8th, Millie and our son Kobie were playing on the bed when Millie fell off the bed, hitting her left shoulder. She was okay, and after checking her, we headed off to explore Benidorm a little more. Millie fell asleep, which was normal for her at the time. After 2 hours, I decided to wake her for lunch. She was sick, and I knew she had a temperature, so we raced back to our hotel. Once we took her clothes off, we noticed what looked like a bruise on her shoulder, and we thought she broke something from falling.

We went to the hospital where they told us to come back the following morning to see the Peads doctor as the X-ray was clear.

The next morning, we woke and Millie's shoulder had gotten worse. It was purple, and she couldn't move her neck and was blinking strangely. I knew something was wrong so we went back to the hospital where they straight away sent Millie to X-rays, ct scans and bloods.

The doctor spoke with me and said Millie's bloods weren't good, and she needed to go by ambulance to Valencia.

My husband and son stayed in Benidorm to pack our bags, and I went with Millie via ambulance.

Once in Valencia, Millie was checked over and within 2 hours was admitted to ICU, where I was told she was critical. They told me she has sepsis and she needed platelet and plasma transitions.

24 hours later, we were told Millie had bacterial meningitis and sepsis.

She spent 4 weeks in the hospital, the doctors called her a little miracle because they had very little hope for her.

Millie falling off the bed in Benidorm saved her life, the bruising was sepsis, which has left only a scar. This could have been a very different story.

It has only been 6 months, but Millie is doing really well considering what she has been through.

She will see a plastics team this year and also has to have another hearing appointment as she failed the first one.

She is our warrior, she has come out of this OK the other side and these side effects are ones we are so grateful for considering this disease has taken lives.

Petrifying, I never knew much about this disease especially what it can do. It takes time to recover mentally, this was a good outcome story but it still isn’t easy at times. Together we can help others overcome this awful disease
