Comment on Tragic Case of Izzy Gentry

At the inquest into the death of 16 year old Izzy Gentry from meningococcal B meningitis, the coroner today gave a conclusion of natural cause of death contributed to by neglect.

Vinny Smith, Chief Executive of Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) said, “This was a tragic example of what happens when meningitis and septicaemia are not recognised and treated quickly enough.

"We are deeply saddened by what happened to Izzy and the thoughts and condolences of everyone at Meningitis Research Foundation are with Izzy’s family and friends. It is because of cases such as Izzy’s that MRF has campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness of meningitis and septicaemia, and for vaccines to protect vulnerable children and teenagers from these deadly infections. We publish guidelines and educational materials for health professionals to help them recognise the illness and deliver life-saving treatment."
